Crane Islands Tour of Crane Wildlife Refuge
Hog Island & Long Island, Essex, Massachusetts
Explore the beauty and tranquility of the islands. Board the Osprey for a trip across the Castle Neck River to visit the 650-acre Cornelius and Mine S. Crane Wildlife Refuge. Bequeathed to The Trustees in 1974, the Crane Wildlife Refuge is maintained to provide habitat for wildlife and to preserve the property in its natural state. On shore, you will tour Hog (Choate) and Long Islands by hay wagon. On your visit you will view the 250-year old Choate family homestead which stands as evidence of the islands? agricultural past. Also featured on the tour is the "Proctor" house, built by Twentieth Century Fox for the filming of The Crucible. A ride to the top of Hog Island offers a panoramic view of three states-the Castle Neck River and Ipswich Bay in Massachusetts, the Isles of Shoals in New Hampshire and Mt. Agamenticus in Maine.
